Interim Superintendent of Schools Is Named

Roberta “Bobbi” Mahler was named interim superintendent Wednesday of the troubled Westminster School District. The former superintendent of Buena Park’s Centralia School District is scheduled to start July 5.
Mahler succeeds interim Supt. Mel Lopez, who quit June 9 after less than two months on the job. Lopez was the fifth high-level administrator to leave over the past year, with five more district and school leaders expected to depart in coming weeks.
The Westminster district has been marked by strife in recent years. Last month it offered a Vietnamese American woman the superintendent’s post, then rescinded the offer a week later.
In 2004, it nearly lost millions of dollars in state and federal funding for refusing to adopt the wording of a state antidiscrimination regulation.
