Respect for Molokai, doughnuts in Oahu and Ritz luxury

Give Molokai its due respect

The article by Beverly Beyette [“Molokai Likes It Lonely,” Oct. 21] was right on. I just visited Molokai in August for seven days. Not much to do, but the island is beautiful, and the locals I found to be very friendly.

The main thing to remember is respect -- respect their land and the people. I talked with a lot of locals. I was even invited to have dinner with a family I met at a campground who were fishing for their dinner.

Go for Oahu’s doughnuts

Regarding “Paradise on a Plate” [Oct. 21]: When we were in Honolulu last year, our relatives there treated us to the most delicious warm, sugary doughnuts, called malasadas, from Leonard’s Bakery. I still dream about them. They have a few locations on Oahu, but the original one is at 933 Kapahula Ave., not far from Waikiki.

Ritz lives up to its luxe name

I beg to differ, Ronald Walker [“Putting on the Ritz? Hardly,” Letters, Oct. 14]. My boyfriend and I usually use the Ritz-Carlton in Marina del Rey for weekends, even though we live nearby.

The view from our penthouse suite is always breathtaking; room service for breakfast is always elegant and delicious. Jer-Ne is fabulous.
