Freshmen begin to join player-run practice at USC

Several USC freshmen joined veteran teammates Monday at player-run practice, a voluntary summer workout, at Cromwell Field.

Fifth-year senior quarterback Cody Kessler led the session.

Quarterback Sam Darnold alternated reps with Kessler and Ricky Town, who enrolled in January.

Aca’Cedric Ware arrived from Cedar Hill, Texas, last week and took the majority of carries at tailback. He also made a few catches out of the backfield.

Receiver Deontay Burnett caught several passes. Burnett is a blue-shirt recruit who is expected to receive a scholarship, which will count toward the 2016 class, when training camp begins.

De’Quan Hampton, a transfer from Long Beach City College, also worked with the receivers.

Walk-on Caleb Wilson traded reps at tight end with third-year sophomore walk-on Connor Spears.

Noah Jefferson and Christian Rector worked with the defensive linemen. Rasheem Green watched from the sideline.

Linebackers Porter Gustin and John Houston competed in drills alongside Cameron Smith, who enrolled in January.

Senior Kevon Seymour instructed Iman Marshall at cornerback.

Players are not available to the media during June workouts.
