Shared Belief, the champion 2-year-old from 2013, has been euthanized after a bout with colic, the horse’s owner, Jungle Racing, announced on its Facebook page.
Jungle Racing’s majority owner is TV and radio personality Jim Rome.
Shared Belief, who was based at trainer Jerry Hollendorfer’s stable at Golden Gate Fields, was sent to UC Davis Thursday morning after signs of colic, the announcement said. Emergency surgery was perfomed but the horse could not be saved.
“We are all absolutely devastated,” the Facebook post said. “Shared Belief was a once in a lifetime horse. A champion, fighter and unbelievable talent who impacted and changed all of our lives. The little horse that feared no one and could do anything.”
The 4-year-old Shared Belief won 10 of 12 starts, including five Grade I races. He finished fourth in the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
