Raiders release quarterback Matt Flynn

Matt Flynn’s stay in Oakland was even shorter than his stint in Seattle.

The Raiders released the backup quarterback Monday, according to multiple reports. The news was first reported by Sports Illustrated.

Oakland originally had hoped that Flynn would be the team’s starting quarterback, just as Seattle had before the Seahawks job was won last season by third-round pick Russell Wilson.

The Raiders traded a 2014 fifth-round pick and a conditional 2015 pick to Seattle for Flynn, who showed significant promise as Aaron Rodgers’ backup in Green Bay.

Flynn was the Raiders starter at the beginning of training camp but ultimately lost the job to Terrelle Pryor. After Pryor suffered a concussion in Week 3, Flynn started Week 4 against Washington, completing 21 of 33 passes for 227 yards with a touchdown and interception in a 24-14 loss.

“Things didn’t work out for Matt Flynn between injuries and Terrelle’s play,” Raiders safety Charles Woodson said Monday on SiriusXM radio, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “No releases surprise me.”

The Chronicle said the Raiders plan to work out potential backup quarterbacks David Carr and Pat White this week.

Flynn, who backed up Raiders bust JaMarcus Russell at Louisiana State, has started a total of one game during the past two seasons yet has pocketed $14.51 million.
