Former Cal State Northridge swim coach Pete Accardy dies

Pete Accardy, considered by many as the most successful sports coach in the history of Cal State Northridge, has died of cancer. He was 72.
During a 24-year career as coach of Northridge’s men’s swim team and 15 seasons as coach of the women’s swim team, Accardy guided the Matadors to 13 NCAA team titles. Nine were men’s titles (1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1985).
He was the first coach in NCAA history to win national championships in the same season in two sports in 1982.
Accardy died July 13 in Del Mar. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and son Lee. Services are pending.
