Fayetteville, N.C.’s, Dennis Smith Jr., the top point guard in the class of 2016, committed to play basketball for N.C. State on Thursday.
He made the announcement on his Twitter account.
Smith (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) is ranked as the No. 4 prospect in the country by ESPN. He has been compared to other great point guards like John Wall, for his natural athletic ability, and Allen Iverson, for his electric quickness and scoring ability.
N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried and assistant coach Orlando Early flew down to Fayetteville in a helicopter on Wednesday to make one more recruiting pitch. Smith injured his left knee this summer on the AAU circuit and is expected to miss his senior season at Fayetteville Trinity Christian.
N.C. State beat out both Duke and North Carolina, among dozens of other national programs, for Smith’s services.
