Baseball’s longest-running losers: New York Mets, Houston Astros

The Kansas City Royals clinched a winning record Sunday, their first since 2003.
The Cleveland Indians have clinched a winning record, their first since 2007. The Pittsburgh Pirates have clinched their first winning record since 1992.
That leaves two teams to share baseball’s longest active losing streaks -- the Houston Astros and the New York Mets. The Astros and Mets last had winning seasons in 2008.
Which team has been more futile? Depends how you measure it.
The Astros have lost 492 games from 2009 to 2013, the Mets 432, through Sunday’s games. With their next loss, the Astros will join the the expansion Mets (1962-65) as the only teams in major league history with three consecutive 106-loss seasons.
The Mets totaled $607 million in opening-day payrolls from 2009 to 2013, the Astros $360 million, according to Cot’s Baseball Contracts.
