A Villa Park High assistant wrestling coach has been arrested and charged with felony battery on a team member, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
Emmanuel Hugo Hernandez, 26, a walk-on assistant coach since 2010, grabbed a student member of the team and placed him in an unauthorized choke hold during an afternoon practice on Wednesday, according to a Sheriff’s Department statement. “Hernandez ignored the victim’s attempt to tell him to stop and ultimately rendered the student victim unconscious,” the statement said.
“Hernandez punched the victim several times in the head, causing visible injury near the right ear. Hernandez immediately left the school as medical aid was rendered to the victim. The victim was transported and treated at a local hospital,” the statement said.
Hernandez was booked into the Orange County jail and is being held on $100,000 bail.
The Orange Unified School District announced that Hernandez has been placed on administrative leave pending outcome of a district investigation.
