Holmes brothers live up to hype for Newbury Park

There was plenty of hype surrounding Friday night’s debut of high-profile prospects and brothers Darick Holmes Jr. and Darnay Holmes. Accordingly, the Newbury Park tandem did not disappoint. Far from it, in fact.

The transfers from Oaks Christian set the tone early on in the game. Their Panthers teammates followed suit. Unfortunately for visiting Birmingham, the result by game’s end was a particularly lopsided loss, 42-14.

“When they showed up on our campus, we knew that it would not be hard to find a use for Darick and Darnay, and really, between them, it’s like having an extra four players on the field every game,” Newbury Park Coach Gary Fabricius said.

The brothers started at receiver and defensive back, but didn’t play for a majority of the second half. There was no need after senior Darick had seven catches for 127 yards and a score. Sophomore Darnay added 90 yards on five receptions.

“Those two are explosive, another thing, Darick and Darnay are as compettive as they come too, it’s fun to be around that type of athlete,” said assistant coach Keith Smith, who graduated from Newbury Park in 1994 before playing at Arizona.
