Golf: The best player in the City 5A League this week was a freshman girl

The boys’ golf season has begun in the City Section, but in the 5A league, the best player might be a girl.
Freshman Tyra Tonkham of Sherman Oaks CES shot a 39 for nine holes using the men’s tees at Encino Golf Course earlier this week, the best individual score among the four teams that played.
She was unable to compete in this season’s City Section girls’ championship because Sherman Oaks CES didn’t have a girls’ team, so she’s competing this season with the boys’ team.
“She’s unbelievably consistent,” North Hollywood Coach Steve Miller said. “She hits the ball down the middle every time.”
Her brother, Troix, is a sophomore golfer at Fresno State.
