Football: Salesian advances, and that’s a stunner

Salesian didn’t exactly have an easy time in the Angelus League this season. There was a 58-20 loss to Cathedral. There was a 46-15 loss to St. Francis. But those teams are pretty good.
In nonleague, there was a 31-6 loss to Loyola and a 49-6 defeat to Bakersfield. Of course, those teams are pretty good, too.
But few expected the Mustangs (5-6) to pull off the bigguest upset in Southern California on Friday night, a 24-18 win over No. 2-seeded La Mirada in an opening game of the Southeast Division playoffs.
It was the Salesian defense that came through. Keisean Nixon returned an interception 63 yards for a touchdown and also had a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to stun a La Mirada team that came in with a 9-1 record.
Kyahva Tezino added almost 70 yards rushing.
About the only team happier than Salesian might be unbeaten St. Francis, the No. 1 seed. Every seeded team that falls helps out the Golden Knights.
