Boys’ basketball: Trevor Stanback is cleared to play for Maranatha

There’s big news out of Pasadena Maranatha, where 6-foot-10 junior center Trevor Stanback was cleared by his doctor on Wednesday afternoon to play in a night Southern Section 4A playoff opener against Milken.
Stanback is in uniform, but it remains to be seen how much he’ll be able to play because he hasn’t practiced all season except for light shooting workouts.
He had been held out as a precautionary move because of an undisclosed medical issue, Coach Tim Tucker said.
Maranatha had expected Stanback to team with Tyler Dorsey, and that’s why the Minutemen had their toughest schedule ever. They were 15-8 without Stanback.
Maranatha is seeded No. 1 in 4A, and it will be interesting to see how quickly Stanback can get into shape. He was part of Chaminade’s Division III state championship team last season as a sophomore.
“We’ll go slow,” Tucker said. “We’re not going to rush him.”
