Man arrested after police chase through Huntington Beach

Huntington Beach police arrested a man who they say was carrying methamphetamine and led them on a pursuit through the city and onto the 405 Freeway.

Robert Swearingin, 55, a city resident, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of possession of narcotics and paraphernalia, resisting, obstructing or delaying a police officer and felony evading, said police, who added that that they linked him to a fugitive warrant.

The incident began near Newland Street and Slater Avenue around 11:20 a.m. when officers attempted to stop a white Suburban, Huntington Beach police said in a Facebook post.

The man, who was alone in the car, did not yield, leading to the pursuit. At some point, he threw a bag out of the window while on the 405 Freeway, the report said.

The driver then exited at Euclid Street and drove to a strip mall parking lot at Brookhurst Street and Ellis Avenue, where he jumped out of the moving car and attempted to flee on foot, police said.

He attempted to enter a business but was stopped by a security screen behind the entrance door. Officers managed to catch up to him and take him into custody.

During the investigation, officers found more than 4 grams of methamphetamine in the vehicle, police said. The bag that was thrown out of the car was not found.
