Governor’s Cup: BYC tied for sixth

The Balboa Yacht Club boat went 3-4 in match races Tuesday and is tied for sixth place among 12 teams after seven of 22 round-robin races on the opening day of the 50th Governor’s Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship off Newport Beach.

BYC, led by skipper Christophe Killian, with crew members Harrison Vandervort and Jack Martin, earned victories over the Japan Yacht Match Race Assn., the Del Rey Yacht Club of Marina del Rey, and the San Francisco Yacht Club on opening day.

BYC was defeated by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, the San Diego Yacht Club, the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club of Australia, and one of three boats representing the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club of Australia.

Teams are awarded one point for each match-race victory and the top four point-getters after the 22 round-robin races will compete in the semifinals, scheduled to begin Friday.

The San Diego Yacht Club leads at this point with seven points, followed by the Cruising Yacht Club (six), Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (five), the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club skippered by Sam Gilmour (five), and the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club skippered by Lachy Gilmour.

BYC will complete the first round of the round-robin format on Wednesday against the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club skippered by Sam Gilmour, the Portland Yacht Club, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, and the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club skippered by Will Boulden.
