IRVINE — Estancia High senior defensive end Jonathan Garcia was transported from the football field in an ambulance to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana after an apparent neck injury in the Eagles’ nonleague football game at University High on Friday.
Garcia lay on the turf following a running play late in the first half. He was motionless on his back for nearly 30 minutes as medical personnel attended to him. His shoulder pads, jersey and face mask were removed, before he was placed on a backboard, with his helmet still on and lifted onto a gurney and into the ambulance.
Estancia trailed, 21-0, at the time of the injury, with 59 seconds left in the first half.
After Garcia was taken from the field, the officials determined halftime would begin.
