Girls’ Tennis: CdM to compete for SoCal title

For a blueprint for success this weekend, the Corona del Mar High girls’ tennis team has to look no further back than last spring.

The CdM boys’ tennis team lost in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 semifinals, but came back to claim the program’s first CIF/USTA Southern California Regional title.

The CdM girls will be attempting the same feat when they begin Southern California regional action on Friday. They found out on Sunday that they made the eight-team draw, and they’re seeded No. 4.

Corona del Mar (22-1) is coming off its only loss of the season, a 9-9 (77-73 on games) setback to Harvard-Westlake in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 semifinals on Nov. 9. The format is different in regionals, with four singles players and three doubles teams playing best-of-three-set matches.

The Sea Kings, led by senior Jasie Dunk and junior Danielle Willson in singles and the doubles team of senior Camellia Edalat and junior Brooke Kenerson, open SoCal Regionals play Friday at 12:15 p.m. at The Claremont Club against Westview High of San Diego.

Should CdM win, it would play either top-seeded North Hollywood Campbell Hall or Palisades Charter in the regional semifinals at 3:15 p.m. Friday. Campbell Hall is returning to The Claremont Club after winning the CIF Southern Section Division 1 title there last Friday, defeating Harvard-Westlake, 10-8, in the championship match.

First-round matchups on the other side of the draw include No. 2-seeded Torrey Pines against University, and No. 3-seeded Harvard-Westlake against Clovis North. The championship match is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, back at The Claremont Club.

CdM’s girls are in the SoCal Regional tournament for the third straight year. The last two seasons, the Sea Kings have lost in the semifinals, including last year to eventual champion Peninsula. Peninsula had won the regional tournament each of the last three years, but didn’t make the tournament this season after losing to University in the Division 1 quarterfinals.
