Boys’ Volleyball: Mesa’s Tufuga singled out

Costa Mesa High senior opposite Mason Tufuga took home the Orange Coast League MVP honor for the second straight year for leading the Mustangs to a runner-up finish in league and their first CIF Southern Section playoff win in seven years.

The Stanford-bound Tufuga, a three-time first-team selection, is on the first team with two senior teammates from Costa Mesa (17-4, 8-2 in league), setter Coby Pham and middle blocker Simon Daniel, as well as Estancia junior outside hitter Evan Pettingill.

The Mustangs swept El Modena, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23, in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs at home. Costa Mesa’s season ended with a three-set loss in the second round at South Torrance.

Tufuga finished with 291 kills, a .488 hitting percentage, 75 assists, 59 blocks, 55 service aces and 72 digs.

Pham, who is on the first team for the second time in as many years, totaled 359 assists, 22 blocks, 21 aces and 46 digs.

Daniel had 127 kills, a .588 hitting percentage and 53 blocks.

Pettingill’s Eagles went 2-13 and shared last place in league at 1-9.

Costa Mesa’s second-team selections were junior outside hitter Nick Warner and senior outside hitter Steven Vu.

Estancia sophomore outside hitter Liam Jason made the second team.

Sage’s Warden All-Academy pick

Sage Hill School junior Parker Warden was named first-team All-Academy League in boys’ volleyball.

Warden, a middle blocker and outside hitter, helped the Lightning to a fourth-place finish in league and the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs.

Sage Hill (6-12, 5-7 in league) swept Lakewood Mayfair in wild-card match at home, before it lost at top-seeded Saddleback Valley Christian in three sets in the first round.

Sage Hill junior setter Shane Larimer was on the second team, while junior libero Adrian Boulos received honorable mention.

Crean Lutheran’s Tanner Petchul earned the Academy League MVP award.
