Plans for Balboa Theater and new restaurant to be topics at Speak Up Newport

Recent efforts to breathe new life into the Balboa Peninsula will be the topic of discussion during Wednesday’s Speak Up Newport event.

Shaheen Sadeghi, founder of Costa Mesa-based Lab Holding LLC, will discuss his plans for the historical Balboa Theater, which has been vacant for years.

Earlier this year, the Newport Beach City Council entered a nine-month exclusive negotiating agreement to work with Lab Holding on a proposal to rejuvenate the 88-year-old theater at 707 E. Balboa Blvd.

Lab Holding has proposed to restore the theater’s original architecture, including its marquee, which could reflect the 1920s wrought-iron style or the neon design used later. The venue would have a cafe, which would open to the street, as well as a small stage for live music and second stage for private events. The live-music stage would have an indoor pub but no seating.

Also, Jim Ulcickas, co-founder of Bluewater Grill, will discuss his idea for a new restaurant at the end of the Newport Pier. The City Council selected Bluewater in March to replace the shuttered building at the end of the pier.

Speak Up Newport will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Community Room, 100 Civic Center Drive.
