Newport man suspected of brandishing knife at neighbor

Newport Beach police arrested a man suspected of going to a neighbor’s apartment and brandishing a knife, according to authorities.

Police said a resident in the 900 block of Irvine Avenue reported the incident around 9 p.m. Tuesday.

He told police that a knife-wielding man opened an unlocked door at the apartment, stood in the doorway and brandished the weapon, which had a 3-inch blade.

The resident managed to close and lock the door, and the intruder returned to his own apartment, said Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella.

When officers arrived, they found the neighbor in a nearby hallway, Manzella said. The knife he is alleged to have been wielding was found in his apartment, Manzella said.

Police arrested Shannon Patrick Moore, 43, on suspicion of exhibiting a deadly weapon.

Authorities said they aren’t sure what prompted the incident.

“There were no known prior disagreements or arguments or ill will between them,” Manzella said.
