Costa Mesa police arrested an 18-year-old man early Tuesday on suspicion of stealing from an unlocked car on Cortez Street.
Police responded to a report of a suspicious man in a white hoodie pulling on car door handles and rifling through vehicles at 4:15 a.m. in the 800 block of Cortez, Sgt. Bang Le said.
When officers arrived, they saw a man who fit the description carrying a black backpack. Police searched the backpack and found a camera worth more than $1,000 inside, Le said.
Officers knocked on doors of nearby homes in search of residents who had left their vehicles unlocked. Le said a man told police that the backpack and camera were his and had been in his unlocked car.
Police arrested Jerome Jover of Costa Mesa on suspicion of prowling, grand theft from a vehicle and receiving stolen property, Le said.
