An 18-year-old Santa Ana woman who had been arguing with her husband as she walked along Pomona Avenue in Costa Mesa suffered major head trauma when she was struck by a car early Saturday.
The incident happened just after 3 a.m. near the intersection of Victoria Street and Pomona Avenue, said Costa Mesa police Lt. Victor Bakkila.
The woman’s husband was riding in a Honda along Pomona Avenue trying to coax his wife into the vehicle. The Honda stopped near the curb when they approached Victoria Street, but the woman continued walking into the intersection outside a crosswalk.
Bakkila said she was struck by a Jeep Patriot driven by a Huntington Beach man west on Victoria Street. The vehicle was traveling about 40 mph, Bakkila said.
The woman was taken to OC Global Medical Center in Santa Ana in critical condition.
The man driving the Jeep remained at the scene of the crash. He was not arrested or cited, police said.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Traffic Investigator Darren Wood at (714) 754-5264.
