Costa Mesa family displaced by fire

A family of five in Costa Mesa escaped a blaze that started as dinner was cooking in their kitchen Tuesday evening, authorities said.

Firefighters were called to the downstairs unit of a triplex in the 1600 block of Coriander Drive at 5:13 p.m. after the family — two parents and three children — realized something was wrong, Costa Mesa fire Capt. Chris Coates said.

“They had dinner in the oven and they had walked in and saw smoke coming from the oven,” Coates said.

After one family member tried unsuccessfully to put out the flames, the residents called 911 and got out of the unit, according to the fire department.

The family was displaced by the blaze and is working with the American Red Cross to find lodging, Coates said.

No one was hurt.

Twenty-one firefighters from Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley and the Orange County Fire Authority responded and doused the blaze within 15 minutes, Coates said.

The crews contained the flames to the kitchen and dining room, according to Coates.

Authorities estimated the damage at $60,000.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire.
