1,776 flags to adorn Newport park for military Field of Honor

American flags will fill Newport Beach’s Castaways Park this weekend in honor of the nation’s military.

For seven years, volunteers from the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor have transformed the park, which overlooks the harbor, into a Field of Honor monument to those who serve in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force and their families in celebration of Armed Forces Day the third Saturday in May.

From Friday to Sunday, 1,776 American flags will fly at the park.

On Saturday, the Exchange Club will present the inaugural Field of Honor Parade led by the Wells Fargo stagecoach, local officials and military personnel. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at Newport Harbor High School at 600 Irvine Ave. and proceed to Westcliff Drive, Dover Drive and Castaways Park. A Field of Honor dedication ceremony will be held at noon in the park, 700 Dover Drive. Admission is free.

The Field of Honor helps raise thousands of dollars each year for military charities, according to the Exchange Club. The money comes from donations and a fee that people can pay to dedicate a flag for the event. The club will place a yellow ribbon with a name, rank, picture and military branch logo on any flag for $45.
