The following is from the June 8 meeting of the Laguna Beach Unified School District Board of Education.
SchoolPower presents district funds
She thanked outgoing Supt. Robert Fraisse and district leaders as well as SchoolPower’s team, trustees, and volunteers whose collaborative efforts with district staff resulted in an exceptional year, exceeding the organization’s goals.
Rounaghi presented Board President Ketta Brown a check for $125,000, the second installment of the group’s $250,000 annual gift.
SchoolPower endowment grants
School principals and staff grant recipients thanked SchoolPower for their generosity and shared the many ways in which the funds will benefit students.
El Morro received $13,000 for fourth-grade-student laptop computers, the “Reading for Meaning” program and DVD players; Top of the World Elementary will put $14,450 toward Science Discovery, laptops, and other electronic learning devices; $16,100 will benefit students at Thurston, through Spark Science, Renaissance Faire, Outdoor Science School, track and field day and Mandarin Scholarship program; Laguna Beach High will use $9,000 for special activities and programs, including a Girls Night Out and new student acclimation funds.
Endowment President Bill O’Hare said the teacher grants are the backbone of what the endowment has contributed to the District over the years and thanked Fraisse and Assistant Supt. of Instructional Services Nancy Hubbell, for helping refine and streamline the process.
The accumulative effect of the grants, which began as specific initiatives by teachers and individuals, have evolved into big innovations which have benefited the District as a whole, he said.
Student represenatives honored
The students were presented with a commemorative gift in appreciation for their service.
