Youth Scene: Games galore

The 2014 Laguna Beach Little League is in full swing, with teams opening their respective seasons in the past week.

The league held Opening Day ceremonies March 3 at Riddle Field.

Major Division

Laguna Beach Hobie 12, Laguna Niguel Pirates 12

Laguna Beach Hobie and the Laguna Niguel Pirates played to a tie score in seven innings. Hobie’s Jamie McKay pitched four innings with one earned run and Adam Kerfoot continued his hitting streak by going two for two and walked twice.

The tie improved Hobie’s record to 0-2-1.

Rotary splits

Laguna Beach Rotary split two recent games, defeating the Laguna Niguel Cardinals, 8-7, before falling, 9-2, to the Cardinals in a Saturday rematch.

AAA Division

Crescent Bay Advisors 3, Laguna Niguel Cubs 2

Crescent Bay Advisors opened up their 2014 season Friday night with a 3-2 walk-off win over visiting Laguna Niguel Cubs. Charlie Pillsbury was brilliant on the mound pitching more than five innings while striking out 10 and walking only one. Hayden Myers came on in relief to get the final out.

With two out and the score tied, 2-2, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Ayrton Garcia hit the game-winning single to right field to drive in the winning run.

UPS 5, BMW 5

UPS and BMW battled to a 5-5 tie Friday . Both teams turned in solid pitching and hitting throughout.

Griffin Naess and Luke Machin took the mound for BMW and gave great pitching efforts. Aidan McDennon, Sam Schineller, Jax Lalouette, Luke Anderton, Lucas Jablon and Jake Cutter all pitched an inning for UPS and combined to hold BMW to only two hits.

UPS led, 3-0, after three innings but BMW battled back to take a 5-3 into the final inning. Not to be denied, UPS scored two runs with Hunter Gray getting the game tying-RBI.

JD Dix led UPS with three hits while BMW’s Oliver Mackel reached base in all three of his plate appearances.

It was a great game by both teams.

Little League fundraiser

Laguna Beach Little League will hold a fundraiser from 6 to 11 p.m. March 20 at the Aliso Creek Inn and Golf Course.

The cost is $50 per ticket and includes dinner, beverages and live music.

Proceeds from the event will be used to pay for recent renovations that have taken place at the Riddle and Alta Laguna baseball fields.

National Junior Basketball

Brooks Hogenauer and Connor Fink are representing Laguna Beach on the joint Laguna Beach-Laguna Hills National Junior Basketball All-Star Team.

The team went 3-3 in pool play last weekend . The team continues postseason play Saturday at the National NJB All-Net Tournament in Garden Grove.
