Gibb collects crown

CINCINNATI — Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb and his partner, Casey Patterson, won the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals’ men’s beach volleyball tournament completed Monday.
Gibb and Patterson, seeded No. 2, defeated No. 5-seeded Theodore Brunner and Nick Lucena, 21-14, 22-20, in the 56-minute final to share the $15,000 first prize.
In the women’s event, also completed Monday, former UC Irvine standout Whitney Pavlik, playing with three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings, lost to Emily Day and Summer Ross in the final.
Pavlik and Walsh Jennings, the No. 2 seeds, shared $10,000.
Newport Harbor High product April Ross, and her partner Jennifer Kessy, shared third place and split $6,500.
The AVP Tour ventures to Atlantic City for a tournament held Saturday through Monday.
