The spring 2013 season of Newport-Mesa Friday Night Youth Flag Football and Cheer wound to an exciting close on a picture-perfect evening in Costa Mesa May 17 at the Jack Hammett Sports Complex.
On May 10, 66 teams in four divisions (grades first-second, third-fourth, fifth-sixth, seventh-eighth) entered the evening with hopes of a playoff championship run.
At the end of the evening half of those teams were eliminated and the other lucky half moved on to the semifinals and finals on May 17.
In the end, only one team came out the division champions and in Friday Night Lights some division have gold and silver playoff divisions so even those teams that might not have had the ball bounce their way during the season, they also had an opportunity to play for a championship.
An additional bonus to the playoffs in Friday Night Lights is the top two teams from gold divisions from each age group from Newport-Mesa Friday Night Lights will move on to face the six other conferences (North San Diego County, Temecula, Murrieta, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach and Los Alamitos) in Los Alamitos for the Friday Night Lights Tournament of Champions June 8.
Newport-Mesa teams will get to see how they stack up against some seasoned teams in Southern California.
