NSSA season kicks off in H.B. this weekend

The first event of the 2012-13 National Scholastic Surfing Assn.’s Southwest Conference Open Season is Saturday and Sunday at the Huntington Beach Pier. The 10-part series also returns to the pier Dec. 1-2.

The NSSA’s Southwest Conference Explorer Season will hold its third series event Oct. 6-7 at Ninth Street in Huntington Beach.

Beach volleyball finals in Surf City

Huntington Beach will serve as host site for the seventh and final event of the 2012 Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series, the National Championships, Sept. 21-23 at the Huntington Beach Pier.

Tournament qualifier matches will be played from 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sept. 21. Tournament main draw matches will be played from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 23. Women’s and Men’s division semifinals and finals matches are Sept. 23. The Women’s final is scheduled for 2:15 p.m., followed by the Men’s final at 4 p.m.

Surf series coming to Pier

The second event of the three-part American Pro Surfing Series is from Sept. 20-26 at the Huntington Beach Pier.

The third series event, Oct. 31-Nov. 7, also is at the pier. Four-man heats make up the contest format, with 64 men and 16 women starting the competition.

The prize purse is $10,000 for the men and $2,000 for the women.
