High School Roundup: CdM girls’ water polo finishes sixth at Irvine Southern California Championships

Junior goalkeeper Maya Avital made 12 saves as the Corona del Mar High girls’ water polo team lost to Santa Barbara San Marcos 6-5 on Saturday in the Irvine Southern California Championships fifth-place match at Irvine’s Woollett Aquatics Center.
Layne Anzaldo, Kira Hoffman, Kaity Greenwald, Carter Britt and Sophie Wallace each scored one goal for Corona del Mar (17-6), which was seeded fourth.
Hoffman, who had two assists and two steals in the fifth-place match, earned all-tournament team honors.
Earlier Saturday, the Sea Kings beat Carlsbad 8-3 in a fifth-place semifinal match. Grace Myers scored five goals.
CdM plays Laguna Beach on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in a Surf League finale at Newport Harbor High. With a victory, the Sea Kings would share the league title with the Breakers.
Newport Harbor 7, Mater Dei 5: Kili Skibby scored two goals for the Sailors in the Irvine Southern California Championships ninth-place match Saturday.
Morgan Netherton, Linnea Kelly, Annie Rankin, Brooke Banta and Taylor Smith also scored for Newport Harbor (16-10).
Banta was an all-tournament team selection for Newport Harbor.
The Sailors also beat Los Alamitos 6-5 in a ninth-place semifinal. Rankin led the way with three goals.
WRESTLING
The Newport Harbor High wrestling team went 1-1 in the Division 6 bracket of the CIF Southern Section Dual Meet Wrestling Championships on Saturday at Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World High.
The Wave League champion Sailors (11-7) defeated Perris Orange Vista 45-36 in the first round, before losing to Newbury Park 42-37 in the quarterfinals.
Corona del Mar, an at-large selection as the second seed out of the Wave League, drew the host school in the first round. The Sea Kings (8-6) were alive with three matches to go, when the Fighting Scots won the heavyweight bout by fall. Rim of the World ended up defeating CdM 42-39.
