College Roundup: Vanguard sweeps at NAIA tourney

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Vanguard def. Columbia (Mo.)
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Lions earned a 25-16, 25-18, 25-13 sweep in the second of three pool-play matches at the 24-team NAIA Tournament at the Tyson Events Center on Wednesday.
No. 21-ranked Vanguard (24-12) meets Southern Oregon on Thursday at 11 a.m. Pacific time. With a victory, the Lions would advance to the single-elimination championship bracket.
Vanguard was swept by Southern Oregon on Aug. 22.
Junior Charlotte Heerlyn hit .667 with a team-best 13 kills and a team-high four block assists on Wednesday, while senior Jessica Neves had 10 hills and hit .353 to help the Lions hit .457 as a team.
Senior libero Kelly Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product, had 16 digs for the Lions.
Sophomore Kelly Dalrymple and junior Lauren Hays had 17 and 16 assists, respectively .
Columbia, which hit .126, fell to 33-7.

Northwestern 3, Vanguard 1
DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — The Lions allowed two first-half goals and narrowly averted a shutout by scoring in the 90th minute of the NAIA Tournament quarterfinal on Wednesday.
Luis Valdavia converted an assist from Zac Way with one second left for the Lions (14-7-2), whose deepest run in the national tournament in program history ended, halting a nine-match unbeaten streak.
The Lions posted a 14-11 advantage in shots and freshman goalie Brandon Gomez had five saves, ad did the Ohio-based school’s Samuel Haggbring.
Juan Arellano led Coach Randy Dodge’s Lions with three shots, while Valdavia and Way had two apiece.
Northwestern (17-4-2) advances to the semifinals.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Vanguard 64, Westmont 58
Junior Samantha Doucette had 27 points and eight rebounds in 40 minutes to lead the No. 3-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener Tuesday.
Jamie Goff had nine points and 11 rebounds, and Riley Holsinger added seven points, six assists, four rebound, two steals and one block for the host Lions (3-0, 1-0 in conference).
No. 13-ranked Westmont is 7-1, 0-1.

Cal State Bakersfield 80, UC Irvine 70
BAKERSFIELD — UC Irvine sophomore guard Irene Chavez scored a career-high 21 points for the Anteaters in Wednesday’s non-conference game at the Icardo Center.
Forward Mokun Fajemisin had 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for UC Irvine (1-7). Senior forward Methlyn Onogomuho also had a double-double, with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Tyonna Outland scored a game-high 27 points for the Roadrunners (5-1).
UC Irvine returns to action on Dec. 14, when it plays host to the University of San Diego at 4 p.m. at the Bren Events Center.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Fresno State 72, UC Irvine 63
FRESNO — Senior forward Will Davis II had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the ‘Eaters in Wednesday’s nonconference game on the road.
Sophomore guard Jaron Martin also had 12 points, including a trio of three-pointers, while sophomore guard Luke Nelson added 10 points.
UCI (3-3) played without 7-foot-6 sophomore center Mamadou Ndiaye (sprained foot), who is listed as day-to-day.
Paul Watson had 23 points and Karchi Edo added 21 points and 10 rebounds for Fresno State (2-6), which snapped a five-game losing streak.
UCI plays host to Sacramento State at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Westmont 77, Vanguard 63
The host Lions shot just 29.2% in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener on Tuesday.
Vanguard, the defending conference and NAIA champion, made just 21 of 72 from the field, including two for 27 from three-point range 7.4%. Vanguard senior guards Chris Gorman and DeAngelo Jones were a combined zero for 11 on three-point tries and a combined nine for 34 from the field.
Jones, who made all seven of his free throws (the Lions were a combined 12 for 21 from the foul line) had 17 points , five rebounds, five steals and two assists.
Gorman had five steals, 10 points and three assists, while senior Keith Mason had 11 points and seven rebounds for No. 1-ranked Vanguard (4-4, 0-1 in conference).
Westmont is 4-3, 1-0.
