High School Roundup: Bacon, Sailors second at league finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Junior Emily Bacon finished in second place in 18 minutes, 23 seconds to lead the Newport Harbor High girls’ cross country team to a second-place finish in the Sunset League finals at Central Park.
The Sailors qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division 2 preliminaries at Mt. San Antonio College Nov. 15.
Senior Erin Barth came in seventh in 19:00 for Newoprt Harbor. Junior Emma Buggeln was eighth in 19:01, Holly Clemence finished 21st in 20:23 and Kendal Marking was 28th in 21:11.

Finis Memorial Cup
SAN JOSE — Corona del Mar High won twice Saturday at Bellarmine Prep to finish fifth in the 16-team tournament.
The Sea Kings topped Miramonte, 16-14, before getting past rival Long Beach Wilson, 12-8, in the fifth-place match.
Ashton Jajonie had a team-best four goals against Miramonte, while Brendan Hack and Jon Polos scored three each and Jack Rodosky scored twice. Nigel Bress made nine saves.
Jajonie also led the Sea Kings in scoring against Wilson, with five goals. Hack scored three and Garrett Spruth scored twice, while Bress also shined with 13 saves.
CdM (21-4), which has already clinched outright its 16th straight Pacific Coast League title, wraps up league play Tuesday at home against Northwood.

Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions
SANTA BARBARA — Corona del Mar High finished seventh after beating La Costa Canyon, 25-16, 25-23, 18-25, 25-16, Saturday.
Jessie Harris led the Sea Kings (21-5) with 16 kills and Natalia Bruening added nine kills.
Great Oak beat CdM, 26-24, 25-18, 17-25, 25-15, in a fifth-place semifinal.
Katie Craig led the Sea Kings with 13 kills, Harris had 11 kills and Payton Carter had 18 digs.

Calvary Chapel Downey 45, Sage Hill 28
DOWNEY – Lightning senior quarterback CJ McCord threw for 303 yards and four touchdowns, but Calvary Chapel won the Academy League game Saturday night.
McCord connected on 17 of his 37 pass attempts, and also threw two interceptions. Senior Vince Wetmore caught five passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Jacob Fisher had seven receptions for 99 yards and one touchdown.
Sage Hill dropped to 3-6, 0-3 in league, falling out of the CIF Southern Section playoff picture.
Calvary Chapel improved to 5-3, 1-2.

Sunset League finals
HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High sophomore Ben Wilson finished seventh in 16:15 at Central Park Saturday.
The Sailors finished fifth.
Junior Erik Herrera (16th in 16:55), sophomore Anthony Agama (26th in 17:24), senior Christian Garcia (27th in 17:25) and sophomore Jake Smith (33rd in 17:55) also competed.
