LOS ANGELES — Junior outside hitter Hayley Hodson recorded 26 kills, leading the Sea Kings to an upset win Thursday against Los Angeles Marymount, ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1AA preseason poll.
The Sea Kings, ranked No. 3, opened the season with a 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21 road victory against the defending CIF Southern Section Division 1A and CIF State Division I champions.
Steve Astor won his coaching debut with CdM.
The Sea Kings play host to No. 7 Mater Dei on Wednesday.

Long Beach Poly def. Newport Harbor
LONG BEACH — Senior middle blocker Carolyn Bockrath had 22 kills and six blocks for the Sailors in their season-opening loss on the road Thursday night.
Long Beach Poly, ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 1-AA, survived in five sets, 25-15, 16-25, 26-28, 26-24, 15-7.
Leah Castillo (10 digs) and Gabby Shelley each added 10 kills for the Sailors, and Logan Grove dished out 32 assists. Sammie Yeager and Kate Hefner combined for 29 digs.
Newport Harbor plays host to Laguna Beach on Tuesday.

LAGUNA NIGUEL — Freshman Alyaa Abdulghany led the Sea Kings with a three-under par 33 in their season opener Thursday at El Niguel.
Amy Matsuoka (37), Karlie Moses (42), Hanna Hogan (43) and Gabby Finear (45) also scored for CdM.
Joo Seo of Aliso Niguel was the medalist, carding a 32.
