Solid seasons end for Surak, Aikhionbare

AUSTIN, Texas — UC Irvine’s Lacey Surak and Itos Aikhionbare saw their stellar 2013 seasons come to an end Saturday.

Surak, a junior, had a top mark in the javelin throw of 148-0 (45.13 meters) in the prelims and did not advance to the final.

Aikhionbare, a sophomore, had a best mark of 49-4 ¼ (15.04 meters) in the shotput as she was competing in her second event of the weekend.

Surak was the Big West Conference champion in the javelin this season and her mark of 149-2 at the Beach Invitational April 20 ranks No. 2 in UCI history.

Aikhionbare set the school record in the discus throw with a mark of 169-5 at the Beach Invitational and her mark of 51-5 in the shotput at the Oxy Invitational May 4 is second-best in the Anteater record book.
