College Roundup: Vanguard men’s tennis wins NAIA quarterfinal

MOBILE, Ala. — Stefan Kilchhofer and Dayman Johnson won in singles and doubles to help the No. 4-seeded Lions win the NAIA Tournament quarterfinal on Thursday at the Mobile Tennis Center.
Vanguard (20-4) advances to the semifinals for the second straight year against an opponent to be determined.
Kilchhofer won at No. 1 singles and teamed with Roger Muri to win at No. 1 doubles against the Kentucky-based school.
Johnson won at No. 4 singles and, along with Filip Burnac, also won at No. 3 doubles for the Lions.
Miguel Saiz-Perez won at No. 3 singles for Vanguard, which trounced Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta, 5-0, in Wednesday’s second round.

EUGENE, Ore. — UC Irvine junior Pete Fernandez shot three-over-par 73 in the first round on Thursday at Eugene Country Club.
Fernandez, competing as an individual, is in an 11-way tie for 30th place, seven shots behind leader Patrick Rodgers of Stanford.
The second round is Friday and the third round is Saturday.
