Briefs: Chin fares well

LA QUINTA — Former UC Irvine All-American John Chin shot three-under-par 69 in Thursday’s second round of the PGA Qualifying School’s final stage at PGA West.
He recorded an eagle, four birdies, a bogey and double bogey during his round at the Nicklaus Tournament Course. Chin is in 47th place at two-under 142 after 36 holes with four rounds left to play.
‘Eaters alum Mike Lavery is 81st at 144 after shooting five-over 77 at the Stadium Course on Thursday.
Sean Shahi, another UCI alum, is 133rd with a two-round total of 148. He shot six-over 78 at the Stadium Course on Thursday.
The final stage is being conducted at the Nicklaus Tournament & Stadium courses through Monday.

Five Pirates lauded
Orange Coast College sophomore Ian Kistler as well as freshmen Cody Serrano and Dustin Serrano have been named first-team All-Orange Empire Conference in men’s water polo.
The Serranos, twin brothers out of Costa Mesa High, and Kistler helped the Pirates post a 16-9 record. OCC advanced to the second round of the Southern California regionals, in which it was the No. 8 seed.
Sophomore Teddy Bandaruk, a Corona del Mar High product, and sophomore Jake Mohler represented OCC on the second team.

Pirates recognized
Orange Coast College sophomore Crystal Vilegas and freshman Alyssa Katreeb have been named first-team All-Orange Empire Conference in women’s water polo.
Vilegas and Katreeb helped the Pirates record a 20-9 record. OCC advanced to the Southern California regionals.
Sophomore Coral Koller and freshman Erika Castillo represented the Pirates on the second team.
