CdM boys’ golf team repeats as CIF South Coast Divisional champ

Around this time last year, the Corona del Mar High boys’ golf team won the CIF Southern Section South Coast Team Divisional title and not too many were surprised.

After all, the Sea Kings had went undefeated during the regular season, 22-0, and grabbed the Pacific Coast League championship.

This year was a bit different. CdM finished third in the PCL and also saw its 45-match winning streak end this season.

However, the Sea Kings shocked the field at Talega Golf Club in San Clemente, where they battled against the rain and repeated as champions in dramatic fashion. CdM shot 380 to edge St. Margaret’s at 381.

Tesoro finished third at 385.

The three teams advanced to play in Thursday’s SCGA Regional Qualifying tournament at Mission Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot Springs.

John Hong led the way for CdM with a one-over-par 73. Walter Frome (75), Karick Brown (77), Drew Hanson (77), Chase Wheatley (78) and Brian Hong (78) also shot in the 70s for the Sea Kings.

“I’m excited as heck that we defended our championship,” CdM Coach Mike Starkweather said in a voice-mail message.
