Newport council may vote on budget

The Newport Beach City Council could vote to adopt the city’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year, hear comments on a proposed telecommunications permit for an obelisk on Newport Coast Drive and “close out accounting” for the new civic center at its meeting Tuesday.
The proposed budget would add police officers while decreasing the city’s overall staff numbers and provide for city beautification projects, staff reports have said.
The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in council chambers, 100 Civic Center Drive.
At a 5 p.m. study session in chambers before the meeting, Deputy Police Chief David McGill is expected to discuss the city’s law enforcement presence on the Fourth of July.
In recent years, the city has taken steps to make the holiday more family-friendly after years of rowdy festivities on the Balboa Peninsula.
