A swimmer died Wednesday after Newport Beach lifeguards pulled him to shore, according to the Orange County coroner’s office.
Tony Castleman, 59, of Tucson, Ariz., died at Hoag Hospital after firefighters took him there in serious condition.
Lifeguards received a report around 8:33 a.m. of a distressed swimmer near 15th Street, according to the Newport Beach Fire Department.
The lifeguards pulled Castleman to shore after two surfers propped him onto their surfboards until authorities could arrive, firefighters said.
