NEWPORT COAST — The Battle of the Bay usually provides drama and tight competition. The boys’ golf clash of Newport Harbor High and Corona del Mar didn’t disappoint that’s for sure.

The teams left Pelican Hill Golf Club’s Ocean South Course early Wednesday evening thinking they tied each other, 386-386, after the 18-hole nonleague match.

But after reviewing scorecards and finding two scoring discrepancies, both teams are disqualified and the match doesn’t count, Newport Coach Scott Tarnow said.

“I’m so disappointed,” Tarnow said. “There are so many issues. I’m not sure what happened.”

Tarnow said he and CdM Coach Mike Starkweather were both upset and it’s uncertain whether there will be a makeup match.

The two discrepancies concerned a CdM player who signed for a lower score than he shot, and a Newport player whose total score was correct, but had numbers flipped for two holes when comparing both scorecards.

The Sailors (9-3) won the previous three contests against the Sea Kings (12-1).
