Chargers are coming on strong

The Edison High boys’ volleyball team got its Sunset League schedule off to a good start Tuesday night, topping Los Alamitos, 25-16, 25-22, 29-27, at home.

The Chargers, ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll, finished third at the Orange County Championships on March 22. But they beat the tournament champion, Huntington Beach, two days later, then came back with a five-game win over tournament runner-up Corona del Mar last Friday.

Edison’s Torey Darin had a team-high 10 kills Tuesday night and Danny McCarty and Nick Capriccio added seven each. Jeff Newell had 25 assists and Michael Brinkley added nine digs.

Huntington Beach 3, Foothill 0: The Oilers swept their Sea View League opener Tuesday, 25-15, 25-18, 29-27. Tyler Kulakowski had a match-high 12 kills for H.B. (15-4), ranked No. 4 in Division I.

Newport Harbor 3, Fountain Valley 0: The Barons were swept, 25-18, 25-12, 25-14, in their Sunset League opener Tuesday.

Esperanza 3, Marina 0: The Vikings fell to the Aztecs, 25-15, 25-18, 25-20, in the Sunset League opener for both schools Tuesday.

SOFTBALL

Edison goes 3-2 at Fastest to First: The Chargers were above .500 in the prestigious tournament played over the weekend at the Huntington Beach Sports Complex. Edison started with a tough 2-1 loss to Jesuit High of Portland, but rebounded for a 2-1 win over Cienega (Vail, Ariz.) and a 9-5 win over Elkins (Missouri City, Texas).

The Chargers fell to Piedra Vista of New Mexico, 3-2, on Saturday but came back for a 1-0 victory over Bingham High of Utah. Freshman Samantha Cordova pitched a no-hitter in the final game, striking out 12, and senior Bridget Barrett had a run-scoring double. Edison plays at Ocean View today in an intercity matchup.

Marina 3, El Toro 2: The Vikings scored a run in the bottom of the 12th on Tuesday, edging out the nonleague game. Pitcher Kristen Struett improved to 3-1 for Marina (9-4).

Brethren Christian 12, Liberty Christian 1: Senior pitcher Heather Williams earned the win as the Warriors prevailed Tuesday at Garden Grove Park.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Huntington Beach 15, Trabuco Hills 7: Huntington Beach High decisively beat Trabuco Hills at home. The strong H.B. offense attacked the Trabuco defense with 42 shots and limited Trabuco to 22. Leading the scoring for the Oilers were junior Jace Gan with six goals and one assist and Steven Koressel with five goals.
