The Vans Pier Classic presented by Jack’s Surfboards had some great weather, sunny skies, 80-degree beach temperatures and some fun 2- to 4-foot surf last weekend for the finals.

Birthday boy Kauai’s Dylan Goodale, who turned 19 Sunday, got his birthday present by taking his first-ever Assn. of Surfing Professionals win by busting some big tail-out moves. Hot local Micah Byrne, who won the event in 2007, was less than a point behind, slashing some rad cutbacks, and ended up second.

Peter Mel, the webcast announcer from Santa Cruz, tore his way to third, and Jason “Ratboy” Collins rounded out the top four spots. High five to Huntington’s Tom Rezvan and Brandon Guilmette, who lost in the semis but were ripping heat after heat, and also Teddy Navarro and Macy Mullen, who went down in the quarterfinals.

In the explosive Ezekiel Pro Junior final, San Clemente’s Kolohe Andino pulled off two insane air-reverse 360s to cap off the win. Andino’s friend, Capistrano Beach’s Luke Davis, who was shredding, too, came in a close second, while Newport’s Andrew Doheny, who also had some big scores, settled for third and Hawaii’s Tyler Newton fourth. Newport’s Chase Wilson lost in the semis, as did last year’s winner, Malibu’s Dillon Perillo. A decent-size crowd was seen on the beach in the summertime conditions.

Meanwhile, in Australia, it’s time for the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach running through April 10. The Assn. of Surfing Professionals’ top 45 surfers and three wild cards are ready to tear up those usually offshore lined-up rights. Bells can hold good-size surf, 15 feet plus if a solid swell hits.

World champ Mick Fanning is considered one of the favorites with his super-fast surfing, as is last year’s winner, Joel Parkinson. Nine-time world champ Kelly Slater and three-time world champ Andy Irons, who’s been practicing in Oz since the last event at Snapper Rocks, are also entered.

Taj Burrow is leading the ratings after winning the first contest and is in quest of his first world title. The ever-amazing Ventura’s Dane Reynolds sits in the third spot and Santa Barbara’s Bobby Martinez is close behind — a good start for the Americans. And yes, Surf City’s Brett Simpson likes lined-up workable rights and should be a threat!

There’s a big surf contest over Easter weekend with top surfers, a music festival, parties and other activities.
