Helen Heaston Gregg

Mundy, who devoted her

life to her family, friends

and church, sharing her

love of music by playing

the piano all her life,

passed away peacefully in

Pomona, CA on November

30, 2009. She was 97.

Raised on a Kansas farm homesteaded by her grandfather,

Helen graduated in 1933 from the University of Kansas with

a Degree in Music. She taught public school music until

her 1942 marriage to Clarence B. Gregg; a classmate from

Lawrence HS and KU days and Partner in Gregg’s Artistic

Homes in Glendale, CA. They lived in Glendale, spending

summers on Balboa Island, raising four children; Barbara,

Don, Kathleen, and Marilyn.

After Clarence’s death in 1960, Helen remained at Balboa

Island and in 1969 married Merrill H. Mundy. Together they

enjoyed 32 years of family, friends, church, travel, bridge and

golf. They lived on the Island until moving to Mt. San Antonio

Gardens, a retirement community in Pomona, CA, in 1996.

They were active members of St. Andrews Presbyterian

Church, Newport Beach, where Helen played the piano for

25 years of Vacation Bible School as well as other church

gatherings. She continued to play the piano at the Gardens

for Devotions, Vespers, and served as President of the

Health Center Council even after a broken hip and stroke

in 1999 resulted in her dependence on a wheelchair. Merrill

passed away in 2002.

Helen lived a long life of faith, love, and generosity. She

took a genuine interest in the welfare of others. She was

predeceased by her daughter Barbara Gregg Momaday,

her sister Fran and brother Robert. She is survived by her

children Don Gregg and his wife Susan, Kathleen Fricke and

her husband Carl, Marilyn Baybutt and her husband Bill, and

Beth Mundy Duke. She was a beloved “Granny” to David,

Peter, and Michael Glenn, Andrew and Charlie Gregg, Erin

Burns, Katherine Suberlak, Kylie Gabbard, Gregg Stoneham,

Cristie Flanigan, and Hannah Baybutt , “Great Granny” to

Megan, Molly and Wyatt Burns, Theresa and Anna Glenn,

and “Great Great Granny” to Raphael Glenn.

A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held at 1 pm

on April 16, 2010 in the Chapel at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian

Church, Newport Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family

suggests that a donation may be made to the Chaplin’s Fund

at Mt. San Antonio Gardens, 900 E. Harrison Ave., Pomona,

CA 91767 or to your local Hospice Organization.
