SALSA surfing returns to pier
For the second straight year, Catherine Vasquez is putting on her SALSA (Surfers Against Lou Gehrig’s Disease Surfing Alliance) surfing event at the Huntington Beach Pier.
Vasquez, 18, said she has two people in her life affected with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Last year, her event raised more than $10,000, all proceeds going to the Orange County chapter of the ALS Assn.
Vasquez said she is hoping to have 120 to 150 contestants in this year’s event, slated for March 20. There are divisions for all ages and skill levels and entries can be accepted until March 18. There is a $35 entry fee.
“Last year, this was my school project for my senior year at Edison High,” Vasquez said. “I’m doing it again this year just for fun, just to help out.”
Vasquez said she is still looking for sponsors and donations, although she said she has donations from top surfing companies, like a 6-foot surfboard, wetsuits and restaurant gift certificates.
