Swings for charity

The pro-am phase of the Toshiba Classic golf tournament got underway Monday and will last through Thursday. The tournament’s professional competition starts Friday.
In the meantime, the Toshiba Classic’s $120-per-plate Breakfast with a Champion event is scheduled for this morning at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa.
The annual golf tournament, which is put on by Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, raises funds for Hoag and Orange County charities and provides scholarships to students from local schools. The recipients of this year’s scholarships are expected to be named at the breakfast.
The Daughters of the American Revolution, whose members volunteer at Toshiba, are among the nonprofit groups that benefit from funds raised for charity.
“We go down and help with mailings and tickets, and they in turn contribute several thousand,” said Peggy Frank, chairwoman of voluntarism for Daughters of the American Revolution.
The contributions go to more than 500 student awards, Frank said.
