Top student athlete Hulst to be honored

Laguna Beach High School Principal Don Austin announced the Ad Hoc Citizen Advisory Committee’s Recommendation that the high school track be named in memory of alumnus and accomplished athlete Eric Hulst.

Austin spoke of Hulst’s strong and pleasant character, determination and athletic accomplishments in the 1970s “” records that to this day have never been broken. He also stressed the importance of teaching tradition and celebrating excellence to the students, as well as encouraging them to make their own contributions to the school.

In addition to Hulst’s name being painted on lane four “” the tradition of painting the top runner’s name on lane five was hindered by an obstructed view “” a plaque will be placed on the lower wall of the stadium.

A dedication ceremony will be March 20 in conjunction with the Laguna Beach Trophy Invitational, prior to the Eric Hulst Memorial 3200 Meter Run.

The naming of the track will be joint-financed between the Track Boosters and the high school’s one-time athletics block grant, Austin said.

SuccessMaker deemed a success

Assistant Supt. for Instructional Services Nancy Hubbell announced that faculty at Top of the World and El Morro Elementary, and Thurston Middle schools have completed their SuccessMaker training.

The technological, standards-based program assesses student levels and individualizes instruction in reading, language arts and math.

Hubbell said students are enthusiastically participating in the pilot SuccessMaker program and learning is taking place.

“SuccessMaker generates data which teachers will use to monitor student progress, resulting in efficient and effective skill building and ultimately in student success,” she said.
