Rustlers upend rivals

Playing against its biggest rival, the Golden West College women’s volleyball team stepped up to the challenge.

Yet, a five-game loss two days later showed the Rustlers that the consistency they’ll need at the end of the season may not quite be there yet.

Golden West upset Orange Coast in four games, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 29-27, on Oct. 7. The Pirates came into the match unbeaten and ranked No. 3 in the state, but the No. 11-ranked Rustlers came to play, even after losing the first game.

Alex Risko had 17 kills for Golden West and Maritza Montes added 14. Mary Lombino had 25 digs.

Golden West (9-3, 2-1 in conference) then fell to No. 16 Riverside at home on Friday, 25-22, 23-25, 22-25, 26-24, 13-15.

The Rustlers played at Fullerton Wednesday and are back in action at 7 p.m. Friday night, at home against Saddleback.
