COSTA MESA — The Pirates won their fourth straight match by scoring in the 65th minute in Orange Empire Conference action Friday.
Shun Katashima sent a free kick toward the Rustlers’ goal, where it was deflected by teammate Dean Regis past Golden West goalkeeper Bill Hambleton (seven saves) and into the back of the net.
Goalkeeper Brian Rippeto came up big for OCC (7-4, 4-0 in conference) in the first half with a sprawling save. He finished with seven saves to preserve the shutout — the team’s first since Sept. 4 against Palomar.
The Pirates’ last loss was 9-0 to Cerritos Sept. 22.
“It was a wake-up call for everone on the team, including the coaches,” OCC assistant coach Glenn Strachan said. “It’s made us all work a little harder out here and since then, things have been every solid.”
Golden West dropped to 6-5, 2-2.
The Pirates will play at Santa Ana Tuesday.
