Eagles 22, Yorba Linda Spartans 16

With two minutes left, Joey Cox caught the game-winning touchdown pass from quarterback Pearson Van Horn, who also provided a big defensive play to set up the score. The Spartans drove to the Eagles’ 15-yard line, but Van Horn then recorded an interception. Jehu Jogwe squeezed up the middle to gain a first down for the Eagles, then Kobe Benter threw a long bomb to Cox.

With 1:19 left in the third quarter, the Eagles’ Desean Lewis intercepted a pass and the Eagles took possession at the 20-yard line. Then an Eagle pass was intercepted. The Spartans scored another touchdown and extra-point kick, taking the lead, 16-8. But the Eagles’ Ben Bockrath ran back the kickoff return 65 yards for a touchdown.

Van Horn started off the third quarter with a 20-yard sprint. Joshua Mendoza carried the ball for another 20 yards and Sam Cruz finished the drive with a 30-yard dash for the Eagles’ first touchdown. Tristan Manning made a successful PAT, tying the score 8-8.

Girls Under 12

Green Hornets 4, Blue Lightning 0

The Green Hornets scored a victory with solid defensive play and aggressive offense. Julianna Eifler scored a hat trick.

The first goal came midway through the first quarter when Ashley Obuljen scored with an assist from Carly Van Oostendorp. Eifler scored the second goal off a free kick after the opposing goalie committed a penalty. Early in the third quarter, Jessalyn Andres took the ball from the defense and passed the ball to Eifler, who scored. During the fourth quarter, Eifler scored her third goal. The Green Hornets played well and this was reflected in the passing, with two of their four goals coming from assists.

The Red Team 2, Strikers 1

The Red Team continued its winning ways Saturday. Sargis Srapyan opened the scoring with a powerful kick from behind the 18-yard line. The scrappy Strikers were able to even up the score before halftime. The Red Team was able to reorganize at halftime. The Red Team’s defensive line of Liam Tough, Spencer Swanson and Sean Arnold was once again solid as a rock. Midfielders Sohrob Goodarzy, Henry Levis and Michael Nieto took control of the midfield and were able to constantly supply balls to the speedy trio of Cooper Peters, Griffin Burke and Alex Michaelson. The pressure finally paid off as Alex Michaelson was able to slot home the second goal of the game in the upper right hand corner. Corbin Joyce and Maxwell Spruill applied constant pressure on the Strikers and came very close in putting the ball in the back of the net on number of occasions.

Boys Under 10

Newport FC vs. Raptors

Newport FC Captains Thomas Vredenburgh and John Bush led Newport in a 6-4 loss to the Raptors. After falling behind early, a solid second half ensued capped by a Jack Pitchess hat trick. Additional contributions came from Garrett Gendron, Hunter Bostwick, Julian Hernandez and Vredenburgh, as they worked the midfield for possession opportunities and created space. Justan Gizer, Lucas Mowery and Kyle Burger bore the defensive brunt and combined with Bush in goal to shut down the second-half scoring. This week’s Game Ball honors went to Pitchess.

Aztecs 1, Gladiators 0

On Saturday, the Aztecs, directed by Coach Wiley batted the Gladiators in a defensive struggle. The Aztecs were led by Reid Wiley, Carter Bays, Sam Darwish, Ty Marking, Blake Ludes, Jack Kalatschan and Anthony Varela. Goalie Luc Stuka made numerous saves. The Gladiators were also resilient in defending their half of the field. The game remained scoreless into the waning minutes of the fourth quarter when Ethan Lacher was able to finally connect for the Aztecs.

Orange Crush 5, Green Grenades 2

Griffin Brockhoff came out strong in the first quarter scoring two left-footed goals. He had three more shots on goal in the game before scoring again in the fourth quarter. Quinn Richards also had a goal in the first quarter after an unsuccessful free kick. He also stole the opponent’s kickoff in the first quarter and had two shots on goal in the fourth quarter. In the second quarter, Ryan Pham had a shot on goal and scored a goal. As goalie in the fourth quarter, Pham made two saves. Gage Greenberg, Jack White and Marcus Croxson played great defense, while Jonny Rimlinger, Garrett Gritzmacher and Scott Ryder played a great offensive game, trapping and passing the ball forward down the field to teammates.

Girls Under 8

Supersonic Squirrels vs.

Lemon-Lime Chameleons

It was an exciting and evenly fought game between the Squirrels and Chameleons. Early in the game, Supersonic Squirrels striker Fay Muenchow made a great shot on goal, which just missed by inches. Chameleons then scored the first and second goals of the game. Squirrels defense Samantha Olson and Mandy Evans played a great second quarter with keeper Daphne Chong making great saves. The Squirrels dominated in the third quarter. A big throw-in from Ellen Terry to Lilly Newman led to a great goal by Bryton La Plante, who kicked the ball over the head of the Chameleons keeper. Successful teamwork led to another goal by La Plante soon after. The Squirrels played hard in the final quarter with Kylie Keirstead in midfield and Lane McArdell attacking the goal.

Boys Under 8

Green Bullets vs. Black Widows

The Green Bullets showed off their skills in a hard fought game. Luke Bashore and Zach Forbath were relentless and provided the scoring punch for the Green Bullets, scoring two goals apiece. The defensive play of the game was made by Jordan Dore, cutting off what appeared to be a sure goal. Jackson Bryant refused to let anything get past him, making a number of great saves at goalie. Ezer DeAlmeida and Cole McCunniff made great plays on defense, creating a number of turnovers and scoring opportunities for teammates. Tommy Kennedy continues to be a wall at fullback, while Indian Pullis was his usual scrappy self, helping out all over the field.

GI Joes vs. Blue Spiders

The Joes’ coaches Devon Brannick and Lexi McCardle made excellent tactical decisions throughout the tough match. Blake Jackson led the Joes offensive pressure in the first half with many shots on goal and aggressive play. Jack Flores and Jack Bibb played with heart on both offense and defense all four quarters. With heads-up defense, Michael Gallegos and Will Schneider held their opponents scoreless the entire first half. Charlie Durham scored his first goal of the season and the Joes’ only goal of the game with a swift kick over the goalie’s head. Sterling Beck and Brett Johnson led a late rally in the final quarter, but the Blue Spiders put up a strong defense.

Boys Under 7

Fighter Jets vs. E-Lemon-Ators

The Fighter Jets’ Richie Rimlinger (first half) and Jerome Snyder (second half) were fearless as goalies, keeping balls out of the net. Aidan Gassel scored his first goal of the season in the first quarter, with an assist by Joseph Whelan. Finn McClintock and Marcus Miller also put in one each in the first quarter. Kaiyo Freyder was named the Fighter Jet player of the game for getting his foot on the ball seven times.
