Sage wins on games, 75-72

NEWPORT BEACH — Lightning senior captain Dominique Moore won the deciding last singles set to give the Lightning a 9-9 tie and the three-game winning margin during the nonleague match at The Tennis Club Tuesday.

No. 1 singles player Julia Blakeley swept, allowing only three games for Sage Hill (8-5), which had its doubles teams win five sets. The Lightning entered ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division IV, while the Breakers tied for No. 10 in the CIF Division I rankings.

NEWPORT BEACH — All three doubles teams swept for the Sailors in the Sunset League match Tuesday.

The No. 1 doubles team of Christina Young and Ricki Archie, along with No. 2 doubles players Alex Aiello and Riley Mathies, as well as No. 3 Lauren Conway and Holly Hovnanian only gave up 12 games combined for Newport Harbor (7-3, 2-0 in league).

IRVINE — Melissa Matsuoka, Katelyn Nguyen and Nini Ugrelidze only dropped two games in six winning sets of singles for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League match Tuesday.

In doubles, Hailey Hogan and Kalika Slevcove won 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 for CdM (8-1, 2-0 in league).

The Sea Kings, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division I, plays host to No. 5-ranked University Thursday at 3 p.m.

COSTA MESA — Senior Brooke Nelson scored a second-half goal to lift the Sailors Tuesday at Harper Community Center.

Senior midfielders Lauren Grupe and Lauren Chandler also played well, as did senior defensive back Zoie Wolfe, Coach Devon Kelly said. The Sailors (6-1, 3-0 in league) play host to Marina on Thursday.

COSTA MESA — Junior Ashley Peters was medalist for the Eagles in the Golden West League win Tuesday at Mesa Linda.

Peters shot five-over par 40 for Estancia (12-2, 5-0). Kim Haycraft (45), Jeana de Arakal (45), Maritza Gonzalez (51) and Frankie Thorpe (51) also scored for the Eagles.

NEWPORT BEACH — Senior Lauren Draganza shot three-over-par 39 to earn medalist for the Sailors in the Sunset League match Tuesday at Big Canyon Country Club.

Seniors Ali Thomas (42), Morgan Moody (43) and Lindsey Hanna (47), as well as sophomore Charlotte Skjonsby (50) scored for Newport (11-0, 5-0 in league), which plays host to Dana Hills today at Santa Ana Country Club.

IRVINE — Senior Sara White shot 10-over-par 46 to earn medalist honors for the Lightning in the Academy League match at Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course Tuesday.

Senior Amy Babbush shot 51 for Sage Hill (2-6, 2-2 in league).

TUSTIN — Tess Crane shot three-over-par 39 for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League match on the back nine at Tustin Ranch Golf Club Tuesday.

Ashley Varner and Amanda Johnson both shot 44, while Grace Kim (45) and Hyebin Hong (48) also scored for CdM (9-6, 3-2 in league).

Beckman’s Katie Park was the medalist, as she shot even par.

NEWPORT BEACH — Juniors Maddy Brown and Lauren Demos had seven kills each to lead the Sailors to a 25-8, 25-13, 25-16 Sunset League-opening win Tuesday.

Sophomore Alex Holbrook had five kills and Demos added two blocks for Newport Harbor (13-3), which played without senior captain Mackenzi Campbell, who broke her right pinkie finger during practice Monday. Campbell, who is bound for Montana State, will visit a doctor Monday to determine how long she will be out, Sailors Coach Dan Glenn said.

Newport Harbor, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division I-AA, plays at Esperanza Thursday.

CERRITOS — Zoe Kreitenberg had five kills for the Lightning in their 25-18, 25-15, 25-15 Academy League-opening win Tuesday.

Maggie Danner added four kills for Sage Hill (5-8, 1-0 league)

CORONA DEL MAR — Max Bergeson and Michael Liao scored four goals each for the Sea Kings in the nonleague match Tuesday.

Blake Terry and Chase Watson added two goals each for CdM (8-2). Bergeson also had three steals and two assists.

CERRITOS — Sophia Witte finished third in 21 minutes, 19 seconds to help the Sage Hill School girls take first place with 39 points Tuesday at Whitney.

St. Margaret’s was second with 48 points. Caroline Grant (21:25) was fourth and Jackie Dion (21:47) fifth for Sage Hill, which also had Campbell Moore (12th in 22:46) and Rannah Dabiri (15th in 22:58) contributing.

On the boys’ side, the Lightning took second with 47 points, behind St. Margaret’s (36). Dylan Thies led the Lightning, finishing third in 16:14. Slater Stanley took seventh in 16:56 and Alomar Brito was ninth in 17:29 for Sage Hill. The Lightning’s David Penner (11th in 17:35) and Alex Jimenez (17th in 18:05) also competed.
